As we are engrossed in the preparations for your birthday, which is just a fortnight away, my mind keeps wandering back to that special day- the day you entered our lives. The memory of that day is still etched in my mind so vividly. Those tiny hands and feet transformed me completely. I felt emotions that I had never felt before. I had my most precious possession in my arms, looking back at me with infallible trust.
It was a misty, dreary morning. There was something off about the day. The cook had called in sick at the last moment. I had an article submission deadline to meet. And then my periods arrived just in time, as if to fan the flames. As I tried to gather the scattered ‘me’, my few months short 5-year-old spilled a bottle of juice on the floor, inadvertently of course.
She stared at her reflection in the mirror. The long, lustrous mane that had been fetching her compliments all her life would be a thing of the past soon. It was her identity, they said. She never thought much of her tresses which turned heads everywhere she went, until now.
The next day, social media buzzed with a powerful and extraordinary picture of a mother and daughter duo.
“40- year-old woman goes bald for teen daughter who is battling a rare cancer of the blood”.
A few days back, a dear friend of mine burst into tears while having a conversation with me about her marital woes. She has been struggling to adjust with her emotionally abusive in-laws and when I suggested that she should get her husband to step in, she responded with despondency.
Donning the hat of a Mom has brought about umpteen changes in me and my lifestyle. Of all the things that have changed, most for the better, the one that amazes me the most is the way I mastered the art of accomplishing tasks at lightning speed. There was a time when I used to relish my meals taking my own sweet time, and be flabbergasted at the rapidity of few of my friends in cooking a dish. There was a time when I would visit the spa regularly to relax and rejuvenate, and spend hours chatting with close friends without having to worry about the ticking of the clock.
